Rewards & Participation Deep Dive

A technical breakdown of Silica's Proof of Stake, node roles, and incentive layers. Mathematical analysis of staking mechanics.

💤 Baseline: Rewards by Default

Silica's PoS system is designed to be hands-off:

  • Auto-staking: All mature balances are staked by default — no bonding transaction, no minimum.
  • Liquid staking: Funds remain spendable; moving coins resets their maturity window.
  • No slashing for holders: Only operators risk slashing (for inactivity or misbehavior). Everyday users simply miss rewards if offline.

Concrete Implementation Example:

// Auto-staking design intent
// All mature balances participate automatically
// No bonding transaction, no minimum stake
// Exact rates will be published when the reward model is finalized

Selection mechanics

Two equivalent approaches can be toggled:

1. Coin-age kernel (Peercoin-style):

weight = balance * min(age, age_cap);
if H(seed || acct || epoch) / weight < target { selected }

2. VRF lottery (Cardano-style):

tickets = f(balance);
vrf_output, vrf_proof = VRF.sign(seed);
if score <= p(balance) { selected }

Both ensure proportional fairness with no minimum stake requirement.

🏗 Node Roles & Rewards

Silica supports multiple participation layers:

1. Full Validators

Stake + reputation + GPoD weighting influence validator selection and rotation.

Earn rewards for participating in ordering/finality and a share of transaction fees.

pub struct FullValidatorNode {
    validator_set: ValidatorSet,
    staking_info: ValidatorStakingInfo,
    reputation_system: EnhancedReputationSystem,
}

2. Gateway / DAS Nodes

Lightweight nodes serving RPC, relaying txs, and sampling data availability.

Low hardware requirements → home-node friendly.

Rewarded via helper bonuses and proportional reward bumps.

3. PoUW Nodes

Contribute useful computation (BOINC/FAH tasks).

Submit Merkle proofs of work for anchoring into lineations.

Earn project-weighted rewards.

4. Stake Pools

Delegation supported with proportional distribution.

Pools use non-custodial management and optional governance features.

📈 Boosts & Lockboxes

Silica allows optional yield enhancements:

LockBox staking (planned):

  • Terms: Multiple lock durations planned.
  • Multipliers: Longer locks earn higher multipliers — exact values to be published.
  • Early exit: Allowed with penalty, fees recycled into reward pool.

Helper bonuses:

  • Gateway nodes and DAS samplers receive reward bumps for verified contributions.
  • Contribution proofs are capped to avoid spam.

Geographic boosts (GPoD linger):

  • Sparse regions receive extra rewards.
  • Bonus lingers partially even after the region fills.

🛡 Fairness & Anti-Gaming

Silica ensures participation remains fair:

  • Cooldowns & warmups: Rewards phase in over ~6 epochs after moving regions.
  • Reputation throttles: Caps on per-epoch reputation growth prevent collusion spikes.
  • Dynamic stake floors: Overcrowded regions require higher minimum stake.
  • Linger bonuses: Prevents hop-farming while rewarding early regional adopters.

🔢 Reward Math

At the epoch level:

scarcity_c = max(0, 1 - n_c / target_c)

Scarcity factor: Rewards validators in under-provisioned regions.

placement_c = 1 + α*scarcity_c - β*crowding_c

Placement score: Adjusts based on overcrowding or scarcity.

G_n = g1*placement_c + g2*quality_n + g3*uptime_n - penalties_n

Geo score (G_n): Weighted combination of placement, quality, uptime.

reward_n = R_epoch * (G_n / Σ G)

Reward share: Proportional to geo score relative to network sum.

📊 Example Flow

1

User holds Chert in wallet → begins earning rewards automatically.

2

Delegates to a stake pool → proportional share of rewards.

3

Runs a gateway node → earns helper bonuses.

4

Opts into LockBox (planned) → earns enhanced rewards.

5

Located in underrepresented region → GPoD boost applied.

All layers stack, so participation is maximized without unnecessary complexity.

✅ Takeaway

Silica's reward model blends:

  • Simplicity for users (just hold to earn).
  • Flexibility for advanced operators (lockboxes, helpers, useful work).
  • Fairness for the network (GPoD boosts, anti-gaming safeguards).

This creates an ecosystem where everyone can earn, and the network stays balanced, secure, and green.
